These standards helped to change what options were and are used to dispose of medical waste, and most operations changed to either thermal treatment or steam sterilization.
Thermal treatment involves shredding the medical waste and then mixing it with water and heating the mixture. Typically microwave technology is used to heat the medical waste to disinfect the material. Autoclaving is the common term for steam sterilization and is a common approach for medical waste disposal as well as sterilizing instruments and other items.
